It was the year when Mike Gottfried and his wife, Mickey, founded Team Focus, a comprehensive mentoring program for fatherless boys and young men. His vision and drive for the program is based on his own life experiences. The goal of Team Focus is to provide fatherless young men, ages 10 to 18, with leadership skills, guidance, Godly values and a continual relationship with a mentor.

Through teamwork with the families, teachers and counselors, Team Focus offers support in a relaxed, cost-free atmosphere. Since the program started 20 years ago, more than 5, fatherless young men have been served throughout the US. The Matadors were the top scoring team in the Big West in Gottfried's first two seasons. They broke a number of single season team records including 3-point field goals made ; , field goals made ; and blocks ; Under Gottfried, the team played in a postseason tournament for the first time in nine years in his first year at the helm College Basketball Invitational and the Matadors posted a seven-game turnaround that season as well.

Over his three seasons, Gottfried's players have been named to the All-Big West team six times including posting five first-team selections. Diane would be named the program's second Division I All-American as a freshman. He coached NC State to the Sweet Sixteen in his first season and back-to-back win seasons in and In his second season at the helm, NC State defeated top-ranked Duke.

Today, nearly five hundred boys participate in Team Focus, which provides fatherless boys with leadership skills and guidance, through summer camp programs, ongoing relationships with mentors, and guidance counselors who help keep track of their grades.
